Tough as Rocks: Turf Reinforcement Mats Offer a Green, Safe Alternative to Rock Riprap
This article on erosion control discusses a green and safe alternative to rock riprap. It is turf reinforcement mats (TRMs), which has the advantage of natural vegetation. The process for selecting a TRM is described. They are rolled and come in blankets that are usually made of photodegradable synthetic mesh or woven biodegradable natural fiber. The Web site of the Erosion Control Technology Council (www.ectc.org) is provided (site accessed June 2007). The Federal Highway Administration Hydraulic Engineering Circular #15 is also referenced. It can be found at www.fhwa.dot.gov. Added advantages of TRMs are that they don’t require excavation, heavy installation equipment or specialized labor to install. Added comparisons of TRMs and riprap are given.
