Naked Streets
This article describes the current state of and future prospects for Urban Traffic Control (UTC) systems. Future gains are expected to be achieved through the use of intelligent infrastructure and connected vehicles. With the use of more intelligent infrastructure, more information will be made available to UTC systems to enhance their abilities. Another potential avenue for data are mobile phones, which are already being used in some situations to provide anonymous reporting on movements. Linking microsimulation with UTC algorithms such as SCOOT is starting to bear fruit, with unique scenarios now capable of being modeled to gain an understanding of their impacts on existing traffic networks. Details on how network managers can use such simulations are given
