Stable Solution: In the United Arab Emirates, Transportation Infrastructure Must Be Designed With the Ability to Withstand Earthquakes
The article reviews uplift mechanical bearings designed by Trelleborg for special seismic loading considerations in transportation infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates. Road deck bearings were needed that would withstand worst-case scenarios around a bridge linking Swehan and the Abu Dhabi airport. The area is close to major earthquake epicenters whose fault lines cross the UAE. Another such area is on the main Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway: a two-deck double lane bridge upgrade. Focus is on mechanical bearing design suitable for uplift force control, when force is generated by design conditions, such as earthquakes; as well as on new solutions that could withstand large displacements in Trelleborg's range of bridge expansion joints.
