Feeder Route

In this article the author discusses the use of the former Sunshine Speedway near Tampa, Florida for the testing of new toll road hardware and software features by the Florida Turnpike Enterprise (FTE). As the organization makes $700 million per year operating 800 toll lanes, 150 toll plazas, and 606 miles of roadway, the use of their actual roadways is not suitable for the testing of new equipment. One such experimental system discussed here in an Automatic Vehicle Identification (AVI) transponder, which was tested on the speedway. By removing test vehicles from the roadway and instead only using them on the closed course, the FTE ensures that they are not producing any unnecessary safety risks. Test runs often require multiple runs of 1,000 vehicles, which would take much longer to complete with the test track.
