Evaluation of the Market Potential of Asian Airports under Liberalization in the Intra-Asian Market
This chapter proposes a mathematical model of the international air transportation market as a perfectly competitive market. First, the chapter examined the market potential of each major airport in Eastern/Southeastern Asia. The numerical computation results suggest that the function of intercontinental gateway airports is concentrated in particular airports: SEL, SHA, and SIN, with SHA and SEL having the most extensive market power. Next, by using certain scenarios, the authors explained the characteristics of NRT, KIX, and SEL, as well as the impact of policy changes regarding runway capacity extension and landing fees. In particular, results show that gateway airports will emerge according to the direction in which passengers travel, and this it will be difficult for NRT to become a global gateway airport because of its limited runway capacity. However, the chapter is limited by the present ability to deal with the actual network shape/form.
