The Welfare Benefits of Proximity: The Economic Gains from Trade Bloc Membership
This chapter examines economic growth as income convergence among countries, with different factor endowments and economic histories when there is a common economic policy in place that provides a mechanism of common welfare maximization. As such, welfare increases are perceived as gains to income. The next section of the chapter examines pertinent, previous research and this is followed by sections on: measures of spatial clustering of income convergence in the European Community (EU); justification of the spatial perspective; and alternative models for evaluation that may be useful for policy assessment along with the data needs of these models. The final section of the chapter is a conclusion.
