Light Touch: A New Viaduct in France is Designed to Tread Lightly on its Surroundings-Both the Ground Conditions and the Views of the Valley it Crosses

The Monestier Viaduct is an 860 m section of the new A51 highway in France's Rhone Valley. The A51, designed to reduce congestion on existing routes, will connect Aix-en-Provence and Grenoble. The viaduct is located in the approximately 1 km wide Fanjaret Valley, situated between two steep mountain ridges. Viaduct design and construction challenges include the area's environmental conditions, altitude, and terrain. Design and construction are discussed. The viaduct is scheduled to open in September 2006, 3 1/2 years after the signing of the design-build contract.
