MasterFormat, originally created in 1963 as a product of the Construction Specifications Institute and Construction Specifications Canada, provides the organizational framework for the written requirements for construction of commercial buildings and civil engineering projects. Detailed written information address the materials, products, systems and assemblies that comprise all types of projects. This article describes the latest edition of MasterFormat, which has been substantially revised to reflect changes in the industry's business and technological environments. The new edition fosters fuller and more accurate specifications. Many new divisions have been added to MasterFormat to create the capacity necessary to organize specifications for heavy civil construction. Training is available to help with the transition and implementation of the new edition.
