COMPACTION OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS - WHAT CAN BE USED?

The author defines compaction. The three main methods of compaction discussed in this paper are line pressure - compaction by means of a static or dead weight on an infinitely small area (steel wheeled dead weight rollers); pressure-compaction by means of a static or dead weight on an actual area (pneumatic tyred rollers); and vibration - compaction by means of a combination of a dynamic force and a static force. Information is provided on the application of different ranges of three wheeled dead weight rollers - indicating that the most accepted range is the 7-10 ton weight, finishing rollers and tandem rollers. The function and use of pneumatic-tyred rollers are discussed, indicating that their main use in the United Kingdom is on surface dressing applications, and the compaction of bituminous materials on runway and airfield construction. The three main categories of vibratory rollers - pedestrian or small tandem vibratory rollers, self-propelled vibratory rollers and medium or heavy tandem vibratory rollers are illustrated and described.
