High-Output Operations Revolutionise Renewals
Network Rail's track upgrading program includes high-output track renewals, which have become more vital as increasing traffic levels create increasing maintenance period pressure. Currently, high-output operations, consisting of two main elements, track renewal and ballast cleaning, account for 15% of Network Rail's track renewals, with significant increases expected over the next three years. In spite of a £90 million investment in three high-output equipment systems, Network Rail is claiming cost savings over conventional methods. An insert discusses Network Rail's establishment of a central operating base as essential to its high-output strategy.
