Thoracic Injury Criterion for Frontal Crash Applicable to All Restraint Systems

The authors propose a new biomechanical criterion, for protection of the thorax in head on collisions, that can be utilized with all current occupant restraint configurations - including seat belts, air bag and seat belts combined, and air bag only. The criterion is based on the measurement of shoulder seat belt forces and central deflection. This criterion applies directly to the Hybrid III dummy model. The criterion was developed through the utilization of simulations on a human model. It was validated by sled tests.
