Finite Element Simulation Study of a Frontal Driver Airbag Deployment for Out-of-Position Situations
The goal of this study was to investigate and evaluate the feasibility of using airbag deployment simulations based on a set of extensive and well-defined physical test matrices. The study is targeted to finite element method simulations of airbag deployment for out of position vehicle occupants. A front airbag on the driver side was used for the study. The study used a Hybrid III 50th percentile dummy in out of position tests, and the airbag was deployed against a force plate. It was found that the airbag deployment pattern is very sensitive to numerical and physical input parameters.
