The imminent introduction of mandatory requirements for hydrostatic release systems for liferafts means that all manufacturers making such rafts will have to finalise their designs. Until recently none had received approval from the UK Department of Trade. At present there are only two British designs which have passed critical examination of the Department of Trade and are now certified as satisfying Regulation 15(p)(ii) of Chapter 11 of the 1974 SOLAS Convention. These are the Beaufort/Berwyn Hydrostatic release and the Dunlop Hydrostatic Release Unit, which, although not identical, have many features in common. As far as British ships are concerned the British Government set a target date of July 1979 for their fitting. Order from BSRA as No. 49,350.
