AN APPROXIMATE ANALYSIS OF THE BUCKLING OF IMPERFECT SPHERICAL SHELLS
An approximate method is presented for predicting elastic collapse of complete spherical shells subject to uniform external pressure. The shell contains an imperfection in the form of an isolated flat spot and the snap through behavior of the flat spot region is analyzed. The existence of higher modes is demonstrated and the effect of various choices for the stiffness coefficients at the edge of the flat spot is investigated.(Author)
