DEVELOPMENT OF AN OPTIMIZED AUTOMATIC TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM

By means of new developments in the fields of traffic engineering and communication science and techniques, it has been possible to device methods to identify, compute and analyze traffic situations and their relationships and to classify them. In accordance with the main areas of the fundamental diagram, average travel time, maximum throughput, and security were selected as representing the criteria for optimization and success. From time to time, the observance of regulations and to be checked in addition to the collection of traffic data to clear up contradictions between the planned and expected and the real success of measures. The research project resulted in an operational traffic control and regulation system on a stretch of 13 km of motorway. This area is surrounded by a data collection system 80 km in length. The control center is located 100 km away. A number of computer programs take care of the collection and processing of data from about 120 inductive loops, their on-line display in color in accordance with anthropotechnic principles and their storage. In addition, the traffic situation is analyzed and classified by means of a new theoretical approach. Decisions on control measures are derived therefrom and in turn transmitted to the system of changeable message signs on the motorway via remote control. The remote control system also surveys the traffic signs. By means of the actualized collection of traffic flow data and their feedback the control circuit is closed.
