FINITE ELEMENT METHOD WITH CONSIDERATION TO THE CONTINUITY OF NORMAL SLOPE

The paper deals with a method of stress analysis of arbitrary shells by the use of the finite element method which employs Lagrange multipliers to obtain continuity of normal slopes of elementary boundaries. In Part I of this paper, formulation of element matrix, which is equivalent to the element stiffness matrix in the case of pure displacement method, is described in detail. In Part II, accuracy and manner of convergence of this bending element are shown by two examples of flat plate problem and application to shell structures is given by cylindrical shell and juncture of cylindrical nozzle and spherical shell. Comparison with analytical solution is also given. (Author)
