The produce unit train offers Western fruit and vegetable shippers an opportunity to shift some of their transportation needs from trucks back to the railroads. Rail transportation is more efficient than is truck transportation in converting diesel fuel to ton-miles. It should also be lower in overall costs. Produce unit trains will require special equipment and special schedules to meet the needs of fresh fruit and vegetable shippers. Implementation of the produce unit train should significantly improve the transportation and marketing of produce to the eastern markets. /Author/
