ON THE EXISTENCE OF SMALL-AMPLITUDE OPTIMUM HYDROFOIL PROPULSION

This paper is concerned with small-amplitude sculling propulsion by means of a flexible hydrofoil. It is shown that when the constraints on the motion of the profile are too loose, no optimum motion exists. On the other hand, constraints are discussed which ensure the existence of an optimum motion. There is, however, a gap in which existence or nonexistence of motions is still unknown.
