DETERMINATION OF THE DEPTH OF THE DOUBLE BOTTOM IN THE INITIAL STAGES OF SHIP DESIGN

Equations are derived for the calculation of double-bottom depth in terms of ship depth, length, breadth, block coefficient, and form of bottom cross-section (V-form, U-form, and intermediate form). A notional graph is obtained from the equations which shows the specific double-bottom depth (double-bottom depth divided by ship depth) plotted against the block coefficient of the double bottom, for various values of the block coefficient of the ship. It is stated that this method of estimating the depth of the double bottom is accurate to within 3--5%. Order from BSRA as No. 49,221.
