Axle Load Variations and Vehicle Growth Projection Models for Safety Assessment of Transportation Structures
This paper focuses on vehicle weight uncertainties and the possible vehicle growth in the performance-based design specification of transportation structures. The axle load distribution factors, or load spectra, of vehicle weights are studied, and methodologies for estimating the accurate spectrum are developed based on the nonlinear least squares approach. Vehicle weights from New Delhi, India, and New York under different traffic conditions are used as examples. The authors offer observations regarding the need for models for calibrating design codes for pavements and bridges in developing countries.
