PAVEMENT STRESSES DUE TO VERTICAL LOADS FROM COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

In the AASHO Road Test, a full-scale experiment under natural conditions, a decrease in pavement serviceability characterizing damage was found under the effect of axle loads between 6 and 10 tons raised to the fourth power. It has therefore been suggested to make use of an influence value which is equal to the sum of the vertical loads, raised to the fourth power, from the axle loads in question. These vertical loads are the combination of static loads and the amplitudes of dynamic loading due to the unevenness of the roadway. If the unevenness is based on a standard distribution, the effective load change values can be calculated statistically for vehicles with known vibration characteristics. The influence values are known for single axles (M. Mitschke, Strasses und Autobahn, 4/1976). Similar calculations have been carried out for vehicles with different tandem axles. A remarkable influence of design and vibration absorption has been confirmed and, furthermore, the detrimental effects of undamped oscillating axles. The effect of vertical loads from twin tires has been found to exceed that of single tires by about one third (P. Siebel, Diss., 1971, TU Munchen). For tractor-trailer units different combinations of axle loads, single and twin-tired, are in use, e.g., driving axle, twin-tired, 10 tons; steering axle, single-tired, 6 tons; trailer, single-tired, 2 x 8 tons due to that and to the static loads encountered predominantly on pavements in good condition, considerable differences in comparable influence values have been found for several trailer combinations. Hence, if the summation formula is applied, giving the maximum axle load alone is not sufficient for characterizing pavement stresses. /Author/
