Focus on Urban Pavements
Focus sur les chaussees urbaines
The United Nations believes that, on a global scale, the number of people living in urban areas will exceed that of people living in rural settings by 2008, a first. Urban environments are evolving, complex, and involve many more players than highway environments. The authors discuss the potential effects of such urbanization on pavements and roadways. The level of government awarding contracts is changing, as are the need for innovation, including environmental criteria; seasonal effects; asset management; sustainable development; and progressing pavement techniques. The authors discuss highlights of a PIARC seminar on urban pavements held in Krakow, Poland.
