An Efficient Heuristic Algorithm for a Two-Echelon Joint Inventory and Routing Problem
Inventory and distribution decisions need to be considered jointly because of increasing emphasis on supply chain coordination, rather than independently as has been done for the most part. A two-echelon distribution system of a number of retailers facing a constant rate of external demand and one warehouse is described by the authors. Both the warehouse and retailers keep inventories. A limited capacity vehicle fleet delivers products to retailers. The authors find a warehouse reorder interval, individual retailer replenishment quantities and associated reorder intervals, and delivery routes minimizing long-run transportation and inventory cost averages through efficient heuristic procedure development.
