Mobile Ticketing Takes Off in Helsinki

Mobile ticketing offers great promise as a convenient, fast and cost efficient alternative for purchasing public transportation tickets. This article describes how mobile ticketing systems work and highlights the early introduction of a mobile ticketing service in Helsinki, Finland. With mobile ticketing services, tickets can be purchased directly with mobile phones and are delivered to the users' phone via short message service (text messaging). No registration or submission of personal information is needed and all mobile phone models can be used. The system is primarily designed to sell single tickets to occasional users. Since mobile ticketing was introduced in Helsinki, more than 9.5 million mobile tickets have been sold. Customer surveys indicate that a vast majority of passengers consider it a useful service and mobile ticket sales are steadily growing. Since fraud is a particular challenge, a patented security control code system has been developed that allows inspectors to check the validity of the ticket easily and without special devices.
