Ticketing and Fare Collection. Helsinki Region Travel Card. A Success Story

A common ticketing and fare collection system is in use within several municipalities in the Helsinki region. This article describes the system and discusses some changes planned for the future. The current system consists of an electronic travel card that can be loaded with either a period ticket (time) or value (money). The travel card can be used on all public transportation modes in the region. Ticket machines are available in many central locations and the cards can be topped up in ticket machines, service points or kiosks. Fare pricing is based on zones, and residents of some municipalities have the right to buy subsidized tickets. A project has been launched to transform the travel card system over the next few years to incorporate new technology. The new system will feature a real-time passenger information system and will also make it easier to extend the system to neighboring municipalities.
