Synthetic Diesel Fuels
Alternative and synthetic diesel fuels are currently available in the marketplace, and the standardization community is working fervently to reflect this reality. Automotive diesel fuels fall under the jurisdiction of ASTM International Subcommittee D02.EO on Burner, Diesel, Non-Aviation Gas Turbine and Marine Fuels, which is responsible for ASTM standard D 975, Specification for Diesel Fuel Oils. The issue facing Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants is how to transition this specification toward covering synthetic fuels while continuing to address alternative diesel fuels. This article provides an overview of the ASTM Committee D02's work on these activities to date, in order to ensure that needs and interests of all stakeholder groups are considered and delivered. Within the stakeholder community, while consumers, regulatory agencies, and engine, fuel, and performance additive manufacturers are at the top of the list, the interests of test equipment manufacturers, multiproduct pipelines, fuel terminal operators, and quality certifying agencies are most critical to the process.
