Alternative Aircraft Fuels

Original equipment manufacturers and regulatory agencies require a great deal of testing before any new alternative fuel can be approved for use. The outcome of such testing is a new fuel specification or the revision of an existing one. ASTM International, through Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, is in a unique position to bring users, producers, and government agencies/regulators together to make alternative fuel use in vehicles and aircraft a reality. ASTM is developing new and revised fuel test methods and specifications. This article gives an overview of development of new and revised fuel test methods/specifications by ASTM, the culmination of debate on properties and quality of alternative fuels offered to the marketplace vs. minimum acceptable requirements. ASTM is ideally suited and positioned to bring all parties to the table in this debate with a structure for consensus and closure so alternate fuels can be expeditiously approved.
