A finite element model is formulated for dynamic analysis in the time domain of a mooring line. The model is non-linear, taking into account transverse viscous drag and the effects of large displacements. The model can be used to investigate the real tension variations in the line, which is of interest for evaluating the possibility of exceeding the breaking strength or getting a slack in the line, and for analysis of fatigue. The mechanical model developed for a mooring line is also applicable to other similar systems, e.g. electrical cables being laid on the sea bottom.
