Geotechnical Engineering at Midpoint of the Interstate Century
The author reviews geotechnical engineering of the Interstate Highway System at the midpoint of the interstate century from the perspective of a geotechnical engineer currently involved with continuing maintenance of the New York State portion of the system. He points to the changes in philosophy and concerns related to environmental impact during this period and the development of "new tools" to speed construction and improve ease of installation. He concludes with comments on what needs to change to meet the demands of the future.
