Geotechnical Research: Where We Have Been and Where We Are Going

This paper reviews some of the great strides that were made in geotechnical engineering research during the early years of the design and construction of the Interstate Highway System, then lays out the challenges facing the future. It discusses issues of increasing concern as experienced engineers retire, and provides a list of some of the areas for future research. It concludes by suggesting the following: continue research and refocus; merge with other disciplines; refocus training; push for permanent professional staffing to develop and maintain corporate knowledge; and shift life-cycle thinking for geotechnical works--100 to 1,000 years.
