ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE DESIGN OF MACHINERY CONTROL PANELS

The quality of marine machinery control is measured principally in terms of the speed and freedom from mistakes of the operators' actions. The design of the control panels has a profound effect on this. A program of theoretical and experimental work is described, in which a computer simulation of the machinery was used to compare subjects' handling of operating tasks on panels in current use and on experimental "mimic" panels. The results showed substantial improvements to be gained from the new panel design. Possible further developments in this field are discussed.
