How Smaller Agencies Size Up Security System Needs

This article discusses the importance of heightened post-9/11 security for smaller ground transit agencies and offers some options as to how these types of agencies might further their awareness. Montebello Transit in Montebello, California and Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) in Albany, New York are presented as examples. The article relates that improving safety measures is seen as a dynamic project that, in addition to boosting security from terrorist threats, can also help curb non-payment of fare, inappropriate rider behavior, or dangerous pedestrian behavior. Montebello Transit has developed a number of dynamic means to educate its staff as to current security theories; in lieu of asking expensive speakers to give an exclusive lecture, employees are instead sent to local community college courses to learn the important information. The installation of cameras in transportation facilities and vehicles is also discussed, as well as the importance of alert employees.
