Supply and Demand: Playing Catch-up is Not the Done Thing in the German Auto Industry, but that's Exactly What the Tier 1s are Having to Do with the Development of Hybrid Systems for the Mass Market

Hybrid system research and development among German Tier 1 automotive suppliers started in 1996. Over the past twelve months, these suppliers have begun forming collaborations. For instance, two of Germany's four major automotive suppliers, Continental Automotive Systems and ZF Friedrichshafen AG, have partnered together in hybrid vehicle design, development, and production. Volkswagen Group has already signed up for the finished technology. Siemens VDO Automotive, another major German supplier, is working on a full hybrid system.
