FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF BUTT WELD AND CRUCIFORM JOINTS TO DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF INTERNAL CRACK-LIKE DEFECTS

Based on fracture mechanics analysis, employing the finite element method, the significance of internal two-dimensional defects in butt welds and cruciform joints for ship hulls, is quantified. The influence of factors such as geometry, static and dynamic stresses and type of material are presented. Results from laboratory tests are compared with the calculated values.
