This paper attempts to give the designer a better understanding of drift control parameters so that he can use his own criteria as well as the code minimum requirements. The code force formula which must be used with the code drift control is reviewed. The calculation of the fundamental period of the building, the distortion as measured by the ratio of the story displacement to the story height, and the maximum probable dynamic force are discussed. The use of an effective maximum acceleration as the ground shaking intensity standard is also discussed. The hazards in regard to structural damage which must be considered, story drift and drift coefficient, and key factors regarding distortion control are also covered. The value of the elastic response data for inelastic response is considered. A design example is described.
