Damage Limitation: Seismic Protection for Stonecutters
The focus of this article is a detailed description of the complex system of buffers currently being installed on Hong Kong’s Stonecutters Bridge. Scheduled to open in 2008, Stonecutters Bridge is considered to be among the world’s largest single-span cable-stayed bridges, at 1600 m in length. To protect the bridge against seismic and wind activity, and traffic braking loads, two sets of four 8000kN shock transmission units (STUs) have been integrated into the design. The authors discuss in detail how these buffers function, are tested (e.g., stiffness test, static loading test, dynamic loading test), and are monitored.
