Word On The Street: CMS Deployment Is Helping Southern California's Drivers With Journey Time and Parking Information

This article focuses on changeable message signs (CMS) applications in Southern California and how their deployment by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is helping to ease congestion problems and provide drivers with journey time information. Focus of the article is on how four Caltrans CMS are working together with a 13-sign array to handle event parking at the City of Anaheim, home to two Disney theme parks, 15,000 hotel rooms, and the Anaheim Convention Center. Drivers traveling to events are directed to specific off ramps in order to efficiently access event parking. The parking facilities for the Convention Center and the Disney theme parks are operated as a single parking resource, with predetermined attendance estimates used to establish sharing of the facilities.
