A side ways glance

A new central geotechnical data management system (GDMS) based on a geographical information system (GIS) has been developed for the UK Highways Agency (HA) by Mott MacDonald with software developer Keynetix. The system uses Autodesk's MapGuide, allowing users to access information online via a standard web browser. The HA GDMS began as a pilot study but is now available nationally. The HA GDMS brings together centralised databases with attached documents and feeds it out to the Highways Agency and its agents via the online interface. The databases include all inspection and maintenance records, maps showing geotechnical hazards and remotely sensed data such as aerial photographs. The new system has allowed the Highways Agency to move to proactive management of its geotechnical assets such as embankments and cuttings and has improved cooperation between the different managing agents.
