Back from the dead

Who killed the electric car? This was the question asked by the filmmaker Chris Paine in his documentary charting the demise of General Motors' EV1 electric car. He suggested that the failure of the car was a combination of a cynical motor industry, oil companies, weak state government in California and uninterested consumers. In the UK, the electric car market is growing. GoinGreen has sold more than 800 of the G-Wiz electric cars, which are manufactured in India. Both AC and DC versions are offered. NICE (no internal combustion engine) is marketing the Mega City electric car developed by France's Aixam-Mega Group. Other newcomers include a DC electric driven car called the Maranello 4 from Sakura and an electric version of the Smart fortwo model. Electric cars in London are exempt from the congestion charge and can be parked and charged for free in the City of London and Westminster. Promoters of electric vehicles want London boroughs to do more to encourage the take up of electric cars.
