How technology can help the driver
This article describes visual-sensor systems that assist car drivers, preventing accidents and improving traffic flow. These include a real-time electronics eye from German company Aglaia. This can notify drivers of approaching traffic signs, warn against possible traffic violations or traffic lane straying, and automatically adapt speed to the speed limit. The traffic sign recognition blocks are described: the Sobel filter, Hough transformation, categorisation, circle search, number recognition, tracking and output. The software framework of the system and the two alternative principles that can be used to process the images (cache- or DMA-based approaches) are outlined. The advantages of the system include independent data transfers, parallel computing units and high clock cycle frequencies, enabling highly complex image processing algorithms to be executed.
