Bridge rating for different commercial vehicle types

The assessment of bridge load capacity for use by individual general freight vehicles, special purpose vehicles {such as cranes) and heavy load platforms requires the specialist expertise of a professional structural engineer with considerable experience in the design and assessment of bridges and other road related structures. A review has been made of historical methods of bridge assessment and associated structural acceptance criteria and the methods used to define mass and dimension limits for different categories of compliant vehicles that may use bridges with different identified load capacity levels and assumed frequencies of repeated loading. The use of traditional axle group mass limits in conjunction with bridge formula to construct axle spacing mass schedules in conjunction with other vehicle type specific supplementary rules is considered to provide the most effective approach to matching categories of compliant vehicles to networks of bridges assessed as having adequate capacity for such vehicles.
