Bus Rapid Transit : A Handbook for Partners
This document describes the policy and role of the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in supporting the development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects and technology. Objectives include strengthening partnerships, expediting project delivery, and improving the performance of California's transportation system. An overview of BRT is presented in which planning, design, operations, and maintenance are covered. The handbook then looks at the various entities that may be involved with BRT. These include: state-local partnerships; transit operators; local, metropolitan, and federal agencies; and the private business sector. Appendices include brief case studies of the following BRT projects in California: Los Angeles MTA Rapid, AC Transit Rapid Bus and BRT, San Diego I-15 Managed Lanes/BRT, Los Angeles MTA Metro Orange Line BRT, as well as other California BRT projects. The handbook also briefly mentions international BRT and Busway experiences.
