Wi-fi On the Move

The use of wi-fi, a wireless local area network that enables users to access online services from their laptop computer or handheld device, has grown substantially in the past few years. This article discusses how railroads can benefit from installing wi-fi facilities. Since a recent survey showed that 52% of respondents would like to be able to access public wi-fi "hotspots" on trains, adding this service could attract new passengers and enhance the travel experience for current customers, especially business travelers. Wi-fi could also allow the relay of real-time information on critical train systems and permit train operators to stream live closed-circuit television footage to central operations for monitoring purposes.
