A Numerical Study of the Lateral Ballast Resistance in Railway Tracks
This article presents three-dimensional elastoplastic finite-element (FE) simulations of ballast deformation in a track, specifically focusing on lateral resistance. A parametric study including varied ballast geometry, vertical and lateral loading, and friction between ballast and sleeper is conducted. The author studies sleeper displacements under different conditions to determine which lateral resistance the ballast will provide, along with how dependent this resistance is on the various parameters. The author notes that, beyond extending the state of the art, the results from the research will be an essential component in designing a structural element that represents the ballast in a full track model that is used for analyzing lateral track stability.
