Reluctant Regulators: Perspectives of Family Physicians on Monitoring Seniors Driving
This article reports on a study undertaken to examine perceptions of family physicians regarding their role of monitoring seniors' driving. The study included 3 focus groups that were held with family physicians that had 25% or more seniors in their practice. Physicians were asked about their role in regulating driving, their understanding of self-regulation, and risk factors requiring attention. The authors describe three themes that emerged: the physicians' role as reluctant regulators; ways to make the role more manageable; and how to deal with "grey" areas, where it is less clear whether or not the senior ought to stop driving. In general, physicians are unhappy in their role and have many ideas for improving the system. The author concludes that, until these changes are implemented, physicians will continue to be reluctant in assuming a proactive role in monitoring seniors' driving and helping them to drive safely, longer.
