3 Weddings and a Ballgame: A Bay Bridge Success Story on the West Approach
This article describes a major seismic safety project for a portion of the eastbound lower deck of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge that was conducted in 2006. The closure to conduct the project was 77 hours long and required the total demolition of a mile of deck. Although the closure was planned for the Labor Day holiday so as not to interfere with workday commuters, constructors still emphasized public outreach to the standard community of legislators, project neighbors, media, and public agencies, alongside the holiday visitors associated with the Labor Day weekend. Upon agreement from the Toll Bridge Program Oversight Committee (TBPOC), the California Transportation Commission (CTC), and the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA), project coordinators began their outreach a month before the closure.
