Above and Beyond: Intelligent Options for Sensing
This article looks at advances in sensor technologies and their various applications to transportation. It first describes a road weather information system (RWIS) that is an embedded device with sensors that determine features such as wetness, ice status, and frost in the road pavement. A remote processing unit is used to collect and store the data from a number of points, thus giving the system multiple values from individual assessments. The article next describes a video detection system used for traffic flow control in Al Madinah, Saudi Arabia. Above-ground sensors providing longer term reliability and consistency, as well as cost-effectiveness resulting from reduced maintenance costs, were required for the system. The article concludes by noting that a number of factors need to be considered when comparing the advantages and disadvantages of embedded versus above-ground sensors.
