Preparing Canadian Municipalities for a Changing Climate

The impacts from anticipated changes in climate are expected to have significant effects on Canadian cities and communities over the next 100 years. As a result, municipal planners and engineers will have to supplement large-scale coordinated mitigation strategies (i.e. , strategies aimed at reducing CO2 emissions, such as those advocated in the Kyoto Protocol) with a series of near- and medium-term adaptive responses designed to help offset the adverse effects of climate change.
