Traffic Sign Retroreflectivity and the Canadian Environment
The Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (MUTCD-C) states that traffic signs “must be illuminated or reflectorized to show the same shape and colours by night as by day." The criterion laid out in the U.S. version of this document is almost identical. Unfortunately, neither manual currently provides much guidance to road authorities concerning the replacement of worn traffic signs due to diminished reflectivity characteristics.
