The article describes the methods and findings of a research project which analysized data on fatal automobile accidents in Michigan during the period 1968-1976. One purpose of the research was to determine what percentage of these accidents involved a driver who had been drinking alcoholic beverages, as well as the rate of alcohol involvement by driver age. The research also attempted to ascertain what effect the 1972 lowering of the legal drinking age in the state has on subsequent fatal accident statistics.
